Topical collection is one of the things that makes the collection of tokens and medals so fun and different from a lot of coin collectors. I came across this picture today on my Facebook feed... and thought that all these different colour schemes look like Boy Scout badges. That got me thinking that Gay Pride events might give out identity tokens at events or sell them as souvenirs. After googling "gay token" all I got was information on minority tokens on tv and film. I then brought up a list of famous gay bars and started ebay searching "X bar token voucher" and found this... Then I started scanning through pictures on ebay after searching "pride souvenier" and came across this token... This is a commemorative medal from the 2000 Philadelphia Pride Week celebrations. I forgot what I typed in to find this but this appears to be a ready made brothel token with the brothel's name later counter punched into it. These must have been generic tokens sold to all the cat houses. Now finally I never had to use one of these living the rural life but apparently in the big city you have to pay for everything, including water and parking spaces! This appears to be a mock coin that would open up a trolley lock at a grocery store. Now my question is has anyone seen any exonumia related to the LGBT movement? I know Circus is a token magpie and when it comes to obscure numismatic topics Sap seems to shine. I can't see myself actively collecting this stuff but maybe this would give enought member an idea or at the very least get us all talking about medals.

I would think that there would be a few Mardi Gras crews that produced tokens for gay pride events and Mardi Gras itself. I asked my best friend (he's gay) he said he hasn't come across anything yet.

I ran "Mardi Gras Doubloon Pride Gay" in the American version of ebay and I found a couple wooden nickels. I am not sure if the Gay 12 was a group or club but when I google that phrase all I get is a YouTube video about a 12 year old coming out. I am not even convinced these mean gay as in homosexual but here they are....

Do not look too closely or you may realize what the gay 12 are

They look like music notes on that wooden nickel, haha. You piqued my interest but I can not find a darn thing on them. Googling the gay 12 just gives me "Gay 12 coming out" "Are you between 12-16 and think you are gay? Take the test!" and so on.
Feel free to PM me the answer if it is not family friendly.

A while back I broke down a rather large collection of Mardi Gras doubloons, there were quite few gay-pride/themed aluminum doubloons especially from the early 1980's... There were also some other aluminum tokens in the collection that were issued by other cities Gay Pride parades from the same era... There were many other Krewes with 'Gay' in the names of the Krewe, such as the 'Gay Timers' and 'Gaylords', however, these were in keeping with the theme of 'old-timey' names, rather than an LGBT theme
In this collection, there was also a grouping of Aluminum tokens from a San Francisco bathhouse, off the top of my head, I believe these were late 1970's & early 1980's as well...
Interestingly enough, I seem to recall all of these netted rather decent prices as compared to many of the other doubloons

I purchased a few hundred dies about ten years ago and in the batch was the one shown below, the Dr. Tom Waddell Gay Games round. I struck 25 with a different reverse die (shown) and put them on ebay. They were a tough sell so I melted out 12 and kept five.

We just came back from New Orleans and my kids walked in the Pride Parade. They didn't see any tokens or doubloons at that time, the LGBT community gives out condoms and pamphlets, though. I will see when we go back in November if we can find any tokens for/about the cause.

Hi Harmonica, I am also am really interested in this topic. I know this post has been dormant for a long time but I am replying in the hopes you will see this. I have started a blog about LGBTQ coins and tokens. it is in its very early stages but check it out. https://quhiar.wixsite.com/queer-coins-tokensAnyway, as I included a token you mentioned in this post I wanted to ask if you had any other information about it?
