My setup is a Nikon D3300 with a tamron 90mm macro thats shoots at 1:1

I just use natural light...

any lighting suggestions to get good detail and any idea how to get a little closer?

I'd think that 1:1 would be good enough for almost any full-coin shot, with an APS-C sensor?

I suppose ways to go past 1x (for shots of a date or mintmark?) with a lens like this would involve either extension tubes, closeup lenses attached to the front, teleconverters between the camera and lens, a reversed camera lens on the front, etc.

I have a 3300 and I use the light from the microwave and the flash, I use Picasa3 to crop and finish the details I want to focus on. The end result is a amazing, with camera's macro I'm able to get the whole coin and Picasa3 is very friendly to the user

Maybe let us know what exactly you're trying to do. Do you have an example of where you are now and maybe an example (from other thread or web source) of what you're trying to achieve?

1:1 is already too much magnification to get a whole coin much larger than a Cent into a picture. A rig such as yours should shoot as well as any other, so all that's needed here is a bit of refining.

hello mcanniz 2 janjso lamps with a disfuser over the bulbs set at 10 and 2 oclock. if you want to get closer you will need extension tubes. but you will not be able to get the whole coin in the images. if you post a couple of pictures here the other members will help you. to get what you may want for images. shrink your images to less than 100k an you can up load a couple. they will help you from there if you want more help that is have a great one

mccaniz, I too use a D3300 and picked up two LED lights similar to the janjso lamps. I purchased a copy stand and use a Nikkor 85mm Micro (macro) lens for 1:1 images. The lighting and a good stand are what I recommend you get next. If you want to get super close to blow up the tiny details, you'll need a different lens. For tether shooting, the free program digicamcontrol works with the D3300
