I personally know the owner of that set. I do not know the history of that specific coin but most have been pulled from circulation. Look at the comment on the 77-D P01. ;-)

Casinos in the 70s-90s used ikes for slots & tables just like morgans & peace back in the day. I would assume, barring mechanical enhancement, they spent alot of time in Vegas, AC, riverboats, etc

Just a stunning set. Maybe circulated in casinos and such.

That 1971-S is spectacular. Yes, this was most certainly a pocket piece. But, man oh man, do I like it!

Lowball Set? Does that mean they are purposely trying to find coins in bad condition?

Yes. It is now a popular trend, especially for Morgan dollar collectors.

Not necessarily "bad condition." Extremely worn with no damage.

Quote: Lowball Set? Does that mean they are purposely trying to find coins in bad condition? Yes. There's something to be said for circulated coins. BU coins are sterile, they lack history, they lack a story. Coins that have been used are far more interesting. (At least in my opinion.)

Quote: Not necessarily "bad condition." Extremely worn with no damage. Exactly. I find honestly worn coins to be beautiful. What could look better than a dateless Buff? All that is left is the amazing artwork that went into the coin.

I don't know if it was softer metal or raised date, but it looks like Buffalo nickels are the quickest to wear (as in amount of wear for age of coin) and lose their date.
