Hey everyone

I just wanted some opinions on this coin offered to me for 1250USD excl P&H. Overall this one is minted at Amphipolis from one of the more common dies however looks good in NGC CH AU 5/5 strike, 4/5 surface.

Main things are what appears to be scratches between Zeus head and the sceptre not mentioned on the holder, lighting perhaps? Which are the only thing holding me back a bit.

Otherwise just want some comments on price/quality as I am primarily looking for quality pieces for my collection and this dealer has provided them.

There is another one available for sale at Roma Numismatics for £1250 here:
http://romanumismatics.com/shop/product/14832/

This one sold for 1250USD excluding Buyers Premium at CNG

This one sold for 1100USD excluding Buyers Premium at CNG

The Roma one appears to have less detail on the hair but has the last Y of the legend however the one I am posting is missing the Y but has more detail on the hair and the eye stands out.

Thanks in advance

I think it's a really nice lifetime example. The scratches are just a little distracting, but the rest of the coin is beautiful. I'm not crazy about it being slabbed but I guess it helps justify the price.

Seems like a lot of money for a common coin. My life time Alexander was like $300 a couple years ago. This is my frustration with NGC. They grade coins all wacky and favor some while others are given lower grades. the coin is not AU it is scratched up, that makes it EF scratched. I would much rather have an unscratched EF than a scratched up AU...if such a thing exists. This is too much for this coin. If I was going to spend this kind of money on a coin (I never have) it would have to be perfect.

Maybe its just me but the whole Alexander Tet design is soooo tired.

what AN said. these things are out of my league, but that seems like more than I would be willing to pay for that coin if I had that much cash to put into a coin.

The price is also way over my head, but it does seem like the prices have gone way up. Still if I was going to spend this much I'd opt for an un-slabbed one in VF+ to EF, and spend the rest on some Roman Republic denari or maybe a Menander or two.

The fact that it is in a slab would make it a no thanks for me.

Thanks guys tho I have gone back and have been second guessing some previous purchases of mine such as these two from Pella which I paid 2250USD each for, tho the first one is MS and the second with the lightning bolt is rare in high grade.

I'm only new to ancients, but it seems that with these Alexanders that your really paying for Zeus's gym membership, the more muscle definition he has the higher the price. I do prefer the design on the Pella lion pelt headdress though. Stunning coins.

I am just blown away by the rendition of Zeus' legs on coin #2. I think you must have posted that coin before, because I remember it really made an impact. The illusion of depth between the legs, the modeling of form, and the convincing representation of thin, draped fabric responding to the underlying structure of the legs...wow. This die engraver was a true master.

Coin #2 - My eyes see that the Eagle has morphed into a Duck. (I can joke because I will never be able to afford to collect these.)

If you have the Dollars, my advice is to buy what YOU like, not what other people like.
