After watching some YouTube videos of people metal detecting and finding some great stuff, I'm thinking about trying to get a metal detector and trying it for myself. The problem is, metal sectors, at least on ebay, are expensive and I'm not so sure how much I will like the hobby. Also, there aren't many places to metal detect where I live (Palatine, IL) and a forest is a no-no because I'm arachnophobic. So in your experience, should I get a metal detector and try it for myself or this isn't for me? |

Try it. Get a cheap one first or even a used one. The ACE 250 is recommended here on CCF a lot. John1  |

Maybe you can go detecting with a local CCF member and see how you like it or borrow one? I have zero idea about these, but I know most of the tools this company sells are semi disposable. Price is usually decent though. http://www.harborfreight.com/catalo...043;detector |

 yes buy a cheap metal detector, Amazon , e-bay. different brands will be different prices. so try an off brand. when you find your first silver coin, you will be hooked into the hobby.  |

I would not recommend that machine on HF. Yes, you'll find "stuff" with it...and yes, you'll become frustrated with it as well. I would recommend a good used machine with a VDI display (Fisher F2 is what I started off with....around $100 used).
Good detectors hold their value really, really well....so if you don't like the sport, just sell it for what you paid for it! You'll be lucky to sell the HF at all if you want to get rid of it. I actually sold my Fisher F2 for $125 after using it for a year and only paying $100 for it.
Buying a detector is like purchasing a coin....buy the best you can afford, otherwise you'll just end up wanting to upgrade it later.

I would love to but I'm starting to think that I won't get into it...
I want to try it though but without buying the equipment. It would be nice if any of the CC members lived by my town and let me try detecting with them.
