Some of us collect ancient coins with themes in mind. The theme need not be the exclusive focus of the collection, but it receives special emphasis. I find the story of the Antioch mint under Justinian and all its varied mint marks fascinating, so a year ago I created a website about it:
Yesterday I added an unusual year 16 follis to it with still another variety of mintmark. If you don't know the story of the change of the name of Antioch to Theopolis you will find it interesting.
Justinian, mint of Theopolis (Antioch) year 16, officina E. Sear 219 38-37 mm. 16.81 grams. 6:00. Mint Mark: CHEUPo, the "o" is high and there is a bar above the CH. There is more about this coin on that educational web page and there is a link to it at the top.
very nice indeed, and that's a great page..I've visited several times. i have a few justinian coins from antioch, the crazy mint mark was one of the things that attracted me to this coin...
very interesting your page with the mintmarks ,so , for some marks I have maybe another explanation : Sear 230 :pi with slash and o : I think it is a ligature of pi and lambda ( l ),it is very easy to see on the second year 21 coin : so you have the abbreviation : pol for polis (town in Greek ). Sear 228 : THU with bar above : it is the abbreviation of Theou in Theou polis : city of God . Sear 218B : like nr 228 Theoupo (lis ). Sear 219 : do you have an explanation for this ?albert
For Sear 230 I don't see any Lambda, just pi and o of "polis". Yes, Sear 288 and 218B abbreviate "Theopolis". I do not know how to interpret the CH with the bar above, or why it would be used, in CHEUPo in Sear 219. http://esty.ancients.info/interesti...stinian.html
sorry for my late answer but I was not at home .I made a transcription of the ligature under the K .I was lucky to buy on internet two coins of Theopolis before leaving .I will pick them up on monday by Fedex and will post them later.albert
here my two coins. The first is a follis in a very nice condition. The second a half follis, but I am not sure of the mint .I read Z under the K , but this mint doesn't exist, I think.albert
