Figured there will be plenty of discussion on this series, so thought I would start a new thread...

1 oz. Fine Silver 3-Coin Subscription - Star Gazing - Mintage: 8,500 (2016)

Had no idea what "Borosilicate Glass" was, so did a quick Wikipedia Search https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borosilicate_glass.

Way less sexy for me now... knowing that "Borosilicate Glass" is basically Pyrex Glass (used in cooking)!

I would be interested in this coin if the mintage was lower, 8500 is too high for a world first. Pass.

Agree that mintage seems too high, but this is being marketed as the "first" in a new series.

Any chance of a huge hit like the Glass Ladybug (5000 mintage) or a few of the coins from the Birds of Canada Series?

Not likely, maybe if the mintage was like 2000 or so which it isn't, so no.

it would be, but for last 2-3 years, people quit to be "hungry" for coins. Too many from everywhere, each one and no one is special.
But I could be mistaken.

Actually blastofffireworks, it is more correct to that Pyrex is the trade name for Corning Glass' Borosilicate product line...

Much like Dasani is the Coca-Cola Company's trade name for filtered, bottled tap water.

The recent GITD firefly coin that just came out a while ago had a mintage of 4,000 and it sold out almost instantly at the Mint. That coin was also a first and dealers have already raised their prices, as well as ebay sellers. So, I think that the mintage of course plays a big part in the popularity of the coin, so we'll see where this one goes.

I don't really care about the mintage and with all the 'firsts' being released by RCM that doesn't impress me either. However, I do have a weakness for anything astronomy related, so I will probably be picking one up.

Practically every month the RCM is coming out with a "first of kind" gimmick. I am not going to run out to buy a coin just because it is a first of a kind. Especially with such a high mintage of 8500 coin.

Remember the weather coin with the lightning seen with a black light? It was similar mintage and it is still not sold out. Or the rectangular flag coin billed as first of a kind.

Absolutely no chance it will be the like ladybug coin. Since the 2013 Superman gold coin, not a single coin has sold for multiple times the issue price.

Buy it if you are into astronomy but it will never appreciate in value.

I've seen this coin a few times already at Post Office. I've describe it as bird drop on the coin. funny that we've forgot that it is a GITD coin. Thanks Jawamin for the picture of it in the dark. It did change my mind about the coin after seeing it in the dark. But I am still not buying it
Rest in Peace

I got mine on Friday - and really liked it until I realized that it too is a GITD coin, then Wow... Very impressed. I don't know if I read about it before receiving it, but the Glow was a nice surprise.

My big question is why are we receiving a 2016 coin, and it's still only July 2015?

As this was the first post regarding 'The Universe' coins, I thought I'd bump it up so that the 'news guy's thread falls back, and doesn't break up the post again.

I think, in order to increase the "2016 sales" (the revenues in the reports), Mint just sales the 2016 coin in mid of 2015, and after it of cause will be more 2015 dated coins.

By the way, this is the series....will you plan to buy all 3?

Like Lostword said, imo, it looks nice in hand in the dark, but still think that later will be offered with the discount.

I would be less hesitance to buy it has a lower mintage (at least under 5000). I know some of you would say "if you like the coin, why do you care about the mintage?" I like to collect coin that not many people have it. :)
