When I didn't have a lot of money I used to click clack penny boxes and the occassional nickel box. At one point I decided since I'm already going through the penny box searching for Wheats, Indian Heads, 2009's, and Canadian's. Why not start collecting 95% Copper coins as well. (2) 5 gal water jugs full of 95% copper pennies later I decided to stop and trade them all in and buy silver since silver went way down. I've been really busy at work and haven't had much time to CRH (Click Clack) but recently I started stopping at local banks to pick up a couple of boxes here and there, already found a indian head. I've gone through about 8 boxes in the last 2 weeks and I'm officially addicted again. There is something about knowing that you are going to find 10 to 12 wheats a box that is exciting. There is something about knowing that you may come across your next Indian Head at any moment. There is something about wishing and hoping that you come across someone's dumped Wheat penny collection. . So I'm back to the same place I was 5 years ago. I'm going through all these pennies, why not start collecting the 95% coppers again. The first time I did, each coin was worth 3 cents in copper value. Now not so much, but how rare are 95% copper coins going to be when I'm 70 yrs old(which is 32 years away). Will the 1959-1982 pennies be as rare to find as wheats are today? Looking forward to your feedback. Edited by Mr Click 07/02/2015 09:29 am

But just like you I do love searching pennies but I search them for varieties since there are so many. It takes me a little longer to go through boxes but I love it!

I am addicted too! I save all my cents in sorter boxes, when I am researching an error or variety...I can just go to that year and I have hundreds to go through. Something to think about when saving these, you would think the copper (pre-1982, some 1982 are zinc) would be harder to find in the future. But post 1982 cents are not coming back from circulation as nice as older ones. So...my theory is to keep them all. I even have a "Fugley Dugley" box full of ugly ones and a "Beauty" box where I keep all the shiny ones. Copper ones are older but the zinc ones are not going to last as long as copper? Someday I believe we will be like Canada and no longer will be minting cents, so that will peak interest and a new breed of collectors will emerge, thus needing these coins in future, copper and zinc ! LOVE MY LINCOLNS !

You are right! the post 1982's look worse than the older copper pennies. That's why since 2010 I've been collecting a few bottles of every year as they come out. Good point about the zinc ones. If I find nice ones of those, I need to start keeping those as well. How cool would it be if in 30 years I have (10) 5 gallon water jugs full of Wheat, Copper and zinc pennies to go through when they are actually rare We shall see what the future holds

I save all my coppers as well and have been contemplating cashing them in to purchase silver but my 50 lbs or so will only net me a few silver coins or maybe just 1 depending on what I want. I'm in he process of going through them looking for errors and varities and then will have to decide to keep or cash in. I am not able to regularly get boxes so usually I do between 3-8 rolls a day so it's taken a while to accumulate as many as I have. I'm kind of torn on what to do becuase I've put in a lot of effort to get as many as I have but silver is my favorite.

I haven't been really saving all the coppers because I don't want to store them all and I don't know that there is much of a market for them now.

To each their own; save the cents if it suits you. I think that buying silver/gold though is the better long term option.
If you hoard copper cents, there's always the option later to do some variety hunting. I had casually filled up a small Dinkel Acker keg with pennies over a decade or so and went through them for varieties. I found many, but most varieties were Zincolns.
As noted above: if circulated LWCs fetch a few cents here and there with low mintages, what will copper LMCs fetch with the billions minted? I presently have a small cloth bag, holds maybe about 1000 cents, of mixed AU/BU coppers/zincolns. I go through it now and again to cull out the lower AU coins, so total count fluctuates a bit. In the long run, I can't imagine that bag being worth more than $100 in a few decades. But I'm not looking at it as an investment. Just some nice coins to look at and share with my grandkids.

Went to the bank and got 4 boxes for the Fourth of July weekend. Out of 4 boxes I found 1 wheat ended. One box had loose pennies in the bottom. 2 were wheats Then one ender was completely scraped off. Turned out to be a regular LMC. I'll give you an update when I'm finished.
