I am relatively new to collecting, to create a realistic collection, what should the lowest grade that one should buy. Obviously a MS67 is possible for many tears , but not practical for the rare years.
Also whta are the differences between high AU grades and low MS grades

Lornegseguin, welcome to the forum. You have a couple of really difficult questions that you have posed. the first, is really a personal question, because some people want to have a set of all similar grades, and other people like the look of a circulated coin over a MS coin. Really you have to discover what you like for yourself.

for silver dollars, if you are trying to get a complete set, you will be paying high $$$ for ms quality coins even high AU. the newer nickel voyager dollars, you can find in higher grades at much lower costs.

your second question is a grey area, and there are lots of overlap, ususlly people would agree on a range of grades.

and don't forget the prooflike grade, in the later years you can get some nice pl65-66, for a fair price. as far as ms- au, I really go by eye appeal.i have a couple of au-58 dollars, but yes someday if the right ms coin of the same year comes along I will probably upgrade.

so as ace said you really have to decide on what you like, and what kind of money you are looking at putting in the hobby. between the 1938,1945,1947's and the king 1948, you are talking a small fortune in higher grade coins. even high grade au's, you are looking at over 2,500$, for the key dates alone

Welcome Lornegseguin to CCF.

MS coins are Mint State - uncirculated business strikes,
MS-67 is a very high grade and to get even a few of them in a collection of Silver Dollars would be expensive.
AU coins are almost uncirculated, showing minimal signs of wear, so they have been circulated.
The difference between AU-50 and MS-60 is not dramatic. Grading is not a precise thing, is subjective.

This site shows some pictures of different graded silver dollars.

Some people, me included, prefer to collect the Proof Like PL or Specimen SP versions.
I have some AU silver dollars of the more rare years, even going to EF
for say 1956, 1946 and 1947. I am yet to purchase the 1945 or 1948 but would look at lower grades to stay in my price range.
I have heard of people collecting all MS, again up to the individual.

It all depends on the quality of coins you wish to own and the number of spare dollars that exist in your bank account.

I recently upgraded my Silver Dollars to MS 60-62 and like many others I let my budget dictate the quality of the 45, 47 and Arnpriors which are EF to AU. Still looking for a 48 but have started a separate fund from the occasional coins and banknote doubles that I sell to purchase one in the future. As a new collector just purchase what you can afford - you can always upgrade when you find a deal in the future. Gatewest has some great prices on Silver Dollars

I would like to have all high grade but I am not going to get that. So I save what I find or can afford. I will upgrade when I have the chance to trade or purchase.

I have been working on the Canadian Type set which gives a chance of having one of each coin minted w/o buying the full set that maybe a lot of $$.

Welcome to the CCF Forum and happy hunting.

This has been the best coin and the members are very informative and answer some of my dumb questions w/o any problems

Type Set could be the way to go.
Except for the `47 ML an MS63 type set is quite affordable.
