I think they are kinda cool. I like them a lot better than the stickered novelty coins and the gold/silver plated ones. Did you pay a premium for the color? I wonder if acetone would remove it if someday someone decided they don't like the coloring.

I do find the selectively gold-plated versions attractive, personally. The fully colorized ones, on the other hand, just look like abominations to me (especially when the "colorization" is just a decal stuck on top).
Just my personal preference.

Consider them a key to opening the truly enjoyable passion of coin collecting. If these are what sparked your interest it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, nor do you ever have to apologize for them.
There are millions of ways to approach coin collecting and the friendly and knowledgeable people on this site will help immensely in showing you a few of those paths.
I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing you all the best in whatever direction you plan for yourself.
For all I know you are the author of the book I buy ten years from now.

I ran into a coin collector who's personal collection consisted of almost all colorized coins. They are quite the talking pieces to show off. In my travels I've run into colorized State Quarters. They were quite popular at that particular show. I haven't personally collected them, but others do. Its all in what your looking for. Some of them are quite gorgeous. Takes quite a bit of talent to make them look that nice.

I do not care for them, but I do understand the appeal. As long as you are not overpaying and are happy, I shall not complain.

I've always wondered how they would look after going through a coin counting machine. If those are hand painted, imagine the person that had the time for that.

If it's colored at the mint like some RCM coins then yes they will grade but the ones like yours that have been colorized outside the mint then no. The US mint has NEVER created a colorized coin but those darn Canadians do it all the time

My principal enjoyment of coins & medals is as art; while I would not go out of my way to colorize a coin, or to acquire colorized coins, once I free myself from the utilitarian anchor concept of 'currency', I can see that colorization is a sensible extension of the coins'n'medals art form.
Not that it would have occurred to me on my own ...
Cheers,

I had a colorized Kennedy that was also gold plated, and the color came off with jsut vinegar. looked like it was a silk screen job done. I am sure acetone would easily remove the colorization.
I just wonder why people go out of their way to color a precious metal coin? I mean a proof and such already has striking detail, does it need color for people to see the details better?

Quote: I just wonder why people go out of their way to color a precious metal coin? I mean a proof and such already has striking detail, does it need color for people to see the details better? It's all about $ shadz. A pure money grab by the types of companies that sell to the uniformed. Sure, some like them as an oddity but that is all they are and all they ever will be.
