From time to time I deviate from my collecting goals of having one representative coin of each ancient and medieval empire. On occasion I will pick up a Roman coin. Although for me to buy a Roman coin these days, there has to be something a little different about it. This one the emperor sacrifices to altar in a fashion similar to the the obverse of some Kushan coins. In this case it was the obverse that screamed to me. I often wonder if I were a Roman Emperor if I would wear a dehydrated Bull penis on my head?

Roman Empire
Italy, Rome
Elagabulas (s. AD 221)
AR Denarius 19 mm x 3.73 grams
Obverse: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, horned, laureate, and draped bust right.
Reverse: PM TR P IIII COS III P P, Elagabalus standing left sacrificing out of patera over lighted altar & holding branch, star left.
Ref: RIC 46
Note: Gorgeous High Grade Example.

I've pretty much gotten away from Roman coins also, but if one like this came along I'd have to get it also. Very nice coin.

Elagabalus was such a meathead.

Beautiful coin, though, Noob.

A real gem !
I would have taken a second look !
Would make a nice pair with my sestertius.
Also begs the question .........
Why on my 'jumbo' sestertius does Elagabalus have a 'little feller' on his laurels and on your
Denarius it is shall we say ........ Prominent !

I did bid on a nice one once not too many years ago and got 'smoked' in the final seconds.
You must have paid handsomely for such a fine ..... ahem ..... specimen.

Back during my 'maroon' period I stumbled upon this Sestertius while prowling around Germania on ebay.
I was so shocked to have won the coin for a bargain price (just over $100) that I never even noticed that darn 'thang' protruding from the top of his head.

That came later !

Around a year or two later on I found a similar type for sale in which the seller spelled it out for me ! P.... E....N.....

Now the coin was priced more than I was prepared to shell out for such a novelty and all things considered ....... well who needs two of those things around the house !
Besides ...... never mind

But then some real instigator down in Bridgeport CT had to point out to me that this coin had actually been sold at a CNG auction the preceding year and that the seller was taking a hit on this transaction.
Combined with the fact that I had just made a windfall on some North Borneo Banknotes I had auctioned ...... Well that sealed the deal !

Besides 'mon frere' (who ogles my folli on occasion) happily took #1 off my hands for double the measly price I had paid for it. It became the proverbial "no brainer" really.

Note too what appears to be the bulls head on the ground in front of that idiot on reverse sacrificing.

Now just for good measure and to insure my precarious financial situation stayed precarious I just had to pick up another.

Sans penis !

But it was a good deal and as can be seen on the reverse the poor bull can be seen (his head) lying this time just behind the little twerp.

Now if not for that awful man down in Connecticut I probably would still have coin #1 and be a very happy man despite not having coin #2. But as one 'thang' often leads to another ........

Well what more can I say !
