Some years ago, when I was collecting Irish copper coins by date, this one was offered to me -

An-Old-Irish-

An-Old-Irish-

The best reference at the time was Dowle & Finn, THE GUIDE BOOK TO THE COINAGE OR IRELAND. It listed this piece as "#350 1680 Large letters, small cross after Carolvs and Dei ------ VERY RARE"

A later author now lists this as common.

Any comments!

Thanks,
Bill

Copper half penny. I believe these start near $100 for very good condition. I'll follow this thread to see what's what.

That piece, in that condition, would be lucky to receive a $15 bid.
Mine is similar to yours, only the price of these have actually come down.

fioti-

Does yours have the 2 crosses in the legend? It was that variation that I was asking about.

Hi rooneydog -

VERY helpful. I had not seen this reference.

It may shed light on my other early Irish.

Many thanks,
Bill

P.S. - It looks like the 1680 1/2d with crosses is no longer considered rare.
