just wanted to share these cool die cracks

the major one starts at the denticles between 1877 and UNITED and goes into Indian's neck and it seems to come out between the 2nd and 3rd feather and up to dentils

there is actually a second crack that comes up through the I in LIBERTY and runs closely parallel to nose and then into portrait around eyebrow level.

By chance do these cracks indicate a die variety?

Very unusual - thanks for your effort here. I have never seen a '77 anything like this. You should forward your photos to Rick Snow at Eagle Eye Rare Coins in Tucson - he would be most interessted in seeing them.

Coinfrog's already given you the best lead you could possibly get - but to answer your question - Is this a die variety?

Yes, it is a variety I'd die for.

There are only 2 obverse dies known for the date. This appears to be the end of the road for one of those dies. I think Rick would love to see this coin in hand. I have never seen die cracks for the date. Nice coin!

Looks like that die was about to split.
Yup, Rick Snow.
I have never seen a die crack either on an 1877.
Cool coin!

Rick's initial thought is planchet cracks. I am inclined to agree since the cracks don't appear raised at all.

But I am sending the coin to him so he can have a closer look.

Nice....keep us updated. If it turns out to be die cracks you have a special coin. Never thought of the planchet cracks idea.

I showed the coin to Rick at the Baltimore show today. He thinks they are most likely actual scratches. Granted he only looked at it for about a minute in-between customers but still..

Didn't see that coming. I kinda ruled that out after PCGS graded it problem free.

Hmmmm not quite sure where to go from here

It would not shock me to see that those are scratches in a "problem free" holder. TPGs are likely to let something small slip through the cracks on key date coins like this.....maybe they downgraded it one grade.
