That's really a cool thing. It's logical, too.

Maybe this is something holding dollar coins back, too...

Coins, generally, are and always have been too expensive to ship to the far side of the world just for military personnel to use in canteens. In the Korean and Vietnam War periods, they used MPC notes. More recently, military bases used AAFES "pogs", plasticized cardboard tokens, instead of coins. Neither the MPC nor AAFES pog systems had currency pieces valued at 1 cent. The canteens simply rounded prices to the nearest 5 cents.
Nowadays, they just use cards and avoid cash altogether; I don't know if they still round the prices, but they no longer technically need to.

They round to the nearest 5 cent here usually.
I find it amusing that the NEX/commissary does not accept cents from customers but will sometimes give them as change. LOL

I don't know when it started but when I was station in Germany in the early eighties. They rounded to the nearest Nickel. The funny thing was. I got a lot of SBA and 2 dollar bills as change.

The kid and I just recently started CRHing Euros and we paid for part of a meal with two rolls of 1 Euro cents. The poor cashier was so confused and had to go get her manager. LOL He looked at the rolls and beat them on the counter to make sure we were not shorting them a penny. LOL

Thanks, Sap. Checked with my son, who's an Army captain and been to Iraq twice, and he confirms this.

They dropped the cents and started rounding at the overseas bases in the late 70's early 80's. They also began usig a lot of 2 dollar notes around the same time. They droped the coins ad went to the "pogs" around the time of the first Desert Storm. or shortly before. So yeah they stopped shipped coins to overseas bases over 20 years ago.

Interesting. While in Saudi Arabia for Shield and Storm I never used or saw Pogs. When in Kuwait in 1992/1993 I still used coins. In Korea in 1995/1996 and 1999/2000 I used coins. The first time that I saw Pogs was in Iraq / Kuwait in 2005 and later. I have never received or seen a two dollar bill while overseas.
I guess it just depends on where you were!
