Found in my half bag this 1976 half and know it is not 40% silver since it sounds different than an actual silver half and it does not have the S mint mark for being a proof( yet it is still shiny and reflective... Polished?). But was wondering if anyone would have an idea of it being plated or colored? Or whether polishing does this too? Thanks for the info! Lots of cool things in half dollar bags! Wanted to show the reflectiveness... In this pic and next the coin in question is on the left of a clad and a silver half

Chrome plated?
By the way, the 1976-S 40% comes in proof and uncirculated versions.

Chrome shouldn't tone like that--I would guess a basement silver plating job? How much does it weigh?

Oh it does come in unc? Well it still doesn't sound silver at all so doubt it is silver. I will have to get the weight after lunch here.

The reverse definitely looks polished. There is something where the mint mark should be, maybe it was removed? I'm guessing it's just a 40% that was polished and has re-toned. Oh, and yes, to answer your question, silver Bic Kennedy halves also came in Unc. : )

Just a spot where the MM would be don't see anything that would make me think there was one. The only confusing part is that it doesn't sound like silver but like a clad coin so was wondering if it was plated with something. I will get the weight here in a little bit.

Ok so it appears that it is 11.1 grams and still highly doubt it is silver 40%.

Quote: Chrome shouldn't tone like that Tell that the the rear bumper on my 1978 Chevette. It looked just like that. Of course, it was more road grime than tone. Cleaned right off. But I concede your point. (I do not know chrome plating.) Quote: Oh it does come in unc? Well it still doesn't sound silver at all so doubt it is silver. Yes, but still with an S mint mark.

Huh. Well must be plated with something then. Or just dipped and polished to make it look that color? I would think if it was dipped would it still have that toning? I thought dipping was used to make them white without the toning

Silver plated. Polished. Then toned. Final answer.

Mister Kairu, a side note. Could you crop your pictures. CCF is spending extra bucks for un-cropped pictures.
