I was at my LCS asking for mercury head dimes to pick through but they were out. I brought up the last time we talked about them getting some world coins in that they send out to melt. I picked through a pile of mostly Canadian dimes/quarters, but I got some of my first 3/6 pence, shilling and florin. I paid $55 for all in the picture, I think did ok, not a spectacular deal, but a few different ones for the bullion stack. I wouldn't mind big pile of UK coins as bullion if they weren't so hard to come by/sent to melt before I can even save them. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

The British and lower-denomination Canadian stuff is indeed "junk", but that's a really cool silver proof, everyone should have a voyageur dollar, and the 1948 peso has a fun story too. Jose Morelos was a great military leader, but he had a fatal flaw - fat cheeks. People complained that this coin was very unflattering to Morelos, and a new peso was introduced in 1950, with Morelos in 3/4s view. Since then, Morelos has never again been depicted in profile with uncovered cheeks on Mexican coins.
And if this is an American dealer who sells world silver coins at melt, continue buying them! You can't lose.

The $55 is with a premium, but I haven't crunched all the numbers after weighing them yet. It'll take a little longer since they are different fineness. Either way, I'm happy to have the variety. Also, this may have been a random luck submission that I came across at the right time. But I will be asking again!

It looks like you got approximately $30 worth of silver. Nice! When you buy foreign junk, especially for stacking, remember the pre 1920 GB stuff is sterling! That's your best value, since most shops just weigh all the coins and multiply by a dollar amount per gram. Try to avoid the post 1920 GB, and the 67-68 Canadian Quarters. They are hard to distinguish if they are .500 or .800

The %90 silver quarter is interesting. I guess somebody must have cracked it out of a set and spent it at some point.

In retrospect I would skip the Canada quarters. He just came up with the price eyeballing the ones I picked, rather than by weight. I think a few of them could sell for more than scrap on e-bay if I tried, so that makes me feel a little better even though I won't do it. I tried to get the rest of the stack of Canada quarters/dimes for cheap. He offered down to 11x face, but being 80% and worn alot, I passed. I wanted to see it by weight then add 20%, but I was in a hurry so I didn't counter-offer.

I think you are missing one quarter from your list, the Vicky on the bottom, or is this a british shilling? the 1904 Canadian quarter if dated could fetch $5+ easy, the Vicky if dated would be easily close to $10, the 66 SD sells everyday up here for close to $20. I think you got a great deal, and I would have bought more if there was.

I still think you did well! I would have ponied up the cash for that deal.

I'm a big fan of a mix purchase of silver foreign coins. I like sticking to Netherlands 2 1/2 Gulden, Venezuela Bolivar, Australian Florins, 70's France 50 Franc coins and Philippines Centavos. Recently pickup 1.78 ASW of a mix of Australian sterling silver and Philippines wartime years centavos coins for the price of $25. Figures out to be $14.04 per troy ounce. You remember deals like that because they don't come along that often.

@ Ace: That would be the 1888 6 Pence facing the barber. The 1904 quarter, very flat in the middle but I could read it was 1904. There was no more to pick through, other than the pile of crappy Canada dimes/quarters and some weird random melt stuff.

Very cool pickup. I never thought of asking my LCS for world silver coins.
I just started a few weeks ago collecting world silver coins and I did not realize the variety and numismatic appeal they have.
Great find again.
