Was it stolen from a show? I really hope it is found and whoever stole it faces justice

That's going to be a hard coin to move. I believe there are less than 20 of these pieces known to exist.

I would hope he had insurance on the coin.
I know from personal experience it is extreemly hard to recover from theft.
About 10 years ago I had a large double corner spot with some 10 large glass display cases selling both coins & jewelry.
One Sunday when we closed the curtains and packed up, I didn't realize that one plastic bin holding some 100+ Proof Sets had been stolen until the next Saturday when we started setting up again.
Since I was a small-time dealer I carried no Insurance, and when it came to selling in public again, I didn't trust anyone and decided to call it quits.
At the same time I still had a ebay Coin Store that lasted until April 2006 when all my online accounts related to ebay had been hacked into...

Sorry for your loss Rick.
Rest in Peace

Conder is correct - almost impossible to sell this outright. Bad break for Rick.

It wouldn't surprise me if this coin has already been cracked out of its holder, and with more then one piece known/confirmed, it may be difficult in a Court of Law to prove ownership, where as Currency is unique with it's series, serial numbers & plate numbers, with no two notes identical (unless in error)...

I know how coin collectors want everything original, reguardless of eye appeal, and frown upon any type of cleaning & restoration...
Should I ever be lucky enough to own a 5,6,or7 figure valued coin, I would be open to have a #1 or #2 certification company place a special laser I.D.number on the coin's edge, along with a Title (like vehicles & boats) to prove ownership, even when removed from holder...
(This is my opinion only, and if ever accepted in Numismatics it would be proof of ownership)..

If whom ever stole it did crack it out of the case & added a scuff & a scratch, it would hardly be as traceable...

Anyone know the circumstances of how this was stolen? I'd imagine this would have been under a locked case minimum.

Yes, that would be interesting to know for sure. Good question.

aardspeed - must disagree. The smallest details of this coin are well-documented, much like a human fingerprint. It cannot be altered and retain it's status without easy detection.
