Philip-III-Of-Macedon-Alexander-The-Great's-Half-Brother

Macedonian Kingdom. Philip III Arrhidaios. 323-317 B.C. AR tetradrachm (26 mm, 16.96 g, 12 h). Babylon mint. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / [BA](sigma)I(lambda)E(omega)[(sigma)] (Phi)I(lambda)I(pi)(pi)OY, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, M; below throne, B above strut. Price P186. VF, light scratches on reverse behind Zeus' head.

Philip III was the compromise choice to succeed Alexander the Great, as Roxana was still pregnant and the sex of the unborn child was unknown. When Roxana gave birth to a male child, named Alexander (IV), he became co-sovereign of the Macedonian throne With his step-uncle. Philip III reigned but did not rule as the true power was in the hand of Perdiccas as regent, followed by the regencies of Antipater and Polyperchon.

echizento, not every coin in my collection is a gem example. I have near-slugs that only I, or some other history geek like myself, would appreciate. But, if I can afford it, I try for the best example possible. Anyway, with my changing interests, one day's collection becomes another day's inventory.

oh my florin, indeed, rarer than the extant Alexander III-types; simply because these were minted for a very short period compared to centuries of coinage in the name of Alexander III.

chrsmat71, nice example. I'm glad to find someone as eclectic as myself.
