I was hoping for some advice on what you think that this coin would be reasonably worth, or what you would pay for it? It's up for auction (in a general auction that sells everything from gold and silver bars to art to random other things).
These are the only 2 photos I have.

Difficult to say from these photos. Is it a drachm or tetradrachm? That's going to make a big difference in price. If it's a drachm $125-$150. Tetradrachm $225-$275. This is just a guess on what I can see from these photos.

It's a tetradrachm. It's a 'liquidation' type auction of an entire slew of random things, so I thought that I might get a decent deal on this.

It has the Philip legend so it is rarer than the Alexander types if it helps.

If you hunt ebay worldwide and are very patient, I have seen coins go for $110 - 120 shipped from Germany to the US. Maybe not this exact coin, but a similar tetradrachm. Prices are typically $175 - $225 if you buy overseas and ship to the US in my humble / rookie opinion. I am good at ebay though.

Anything under $100 buy buy buy.

Anything under $200 is likely a buy buy buy if you like it.

At $250 range I would need to see price comps honestly and probably better pics.

I would also look up the Price # posted on the coin to see if it is a good match and then what the price comps are on http://www.acsearch.info .

Assuming it is real and you are looking for a bargain, bid confidently to at least $100 and probably at least $150 honestly.

Hope this helps. I am talking US Dollar pricing, adjust accordingly for Canadian Dollars.

I bought one earlier this year from Germany that is slightly nicer in my opinion for $186 delivered to Ohio from Germany.

Edit: if Rufus and Ech think it is worth more than what I say, I would listen to them and not me.

Here are 4 Tetradrachm's from my saved sellers. I bought my Tet off this seller and was very happy. Looked better in hand than in pictures. Obviously not all the same coin, many not remotely similar, but I hope it helps you get some insight into pricing.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Savoca-Coin...em3cfe8abc0f

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Savoca-Coin...em3aad99de92

None of these are very nice honestly but they are cheap at the moment and likely to go cheap. Probably all under $200 US$.

At least this info was free if not useful.

I believe it is Philip III Arrhideaus half brother of Alexander and a much rarer coin than an Alex Tet.
If you can get it for under $300 I think it is a good deal.

I have 2 in my inventory slated for my upcoming Buy or Bid sale: Myriandos (or Issos) mint, Price #P134 for $185 in gF; Babylon mint, Price #P186 for $270 in VF. (My reply is not meant as a commercial post, that's why I am intentionally excluding images!)

From a quick glance at vcoins it seems a number of the Philip Legend/Alexanders have parts of the legend of the flan. If you got it for below $200 I would say awesome, Full Retail would probably be around $250-300 going of vcoins. Be careful in general auctions as it has happened where people don't properly understand somethings actual value and end up paying ridiculous money.

Good point on not getting excited in general auctions.

My go to dealer sells beat up Morgan dollars to a few auctioneers in the area. They list them with the rest of the auction and invariably get someone buying on a hope and a dream. The coins invariably come back into the shop and he tells them they are culls and what he will buy them for and then what he sells them at.

One born every minute.

Thanks everyone...I increased my bid to $145 (Canadian - there's a 20% fee on top of that...but at least no tax since it's silver).
I'm currently winning at $100 Canadian. I'll post what happens - the auction ends in 5 1/2 hours.

When a non-collector asks me what an ancient coin is worth, my usual reply is "whatever the higher of two bidders bids!" That said, a general auction is a hit or miss. I've seen crazy outcomes just because someone thinks a coin is worth millions because, well, its more that 2000 year old. Or, the opposite where they get little bidding action because, well, if they were real they'd be in a museum.

As for coinage in the name of Philip II Arrhidaios, as can be seen from this thread, people often gloss over the inscription because visually they see a tetradrachm of Alexander III. In this case, the bidder who pays attention wins.

Thanks numisart. I'm still winning the bid at $100 Canadian, which is $120 with the 20% commission...although my max is set a bit higher.
I ended up bidding on a number of the other coins...some of them have professional grading with RIC and Price numbers which made them easy to look up...!
I went to this auction a few months ago for some art, and it's not a huge set up...I figured that it increases my likelihood of getting a decent deal!

markbear, CAD 120 -- even 50% more -- is a real bargain. Good luck and let us know what else you take home.
