I recently purchased this coin in the grade that I wanted. I been looking for a 1921 S with strong luster and a solid strike and the coin meets both of these qualities. I have some concerns because the coin may not measure up the grade on the holder. Please tell me what you would grade the coin. GRADE: MS 64+ I have been on the fence about returning the coin for a refund because of the tiny bag marks on the cheek. I have been looking for a MS64+ with a solid strike and nice luster for about six months as PCGS has only graded 138 in 64+ and the MS 65's are priced above $1000. I will make the decision to keep the coin or return on Monday, so if you have anything else to offer, please let me know. Thanks for the grades and I noticed that some you and PCGS are able to look past the tiny bag marks because of the other strong qualities of the coin. Edited by Slider23 07/17/2015 08:32 am

That sums it up Otherwise, I think it's a MS-66 but maybe a technical slab downgrade to a -65 because of the cheek. Those fields are to "die" for. :) Such luster! Oh my.

Could you take some more pictures of the coin, it's hard to tell what's going on with Liberty's cheek. Looks like there are quite a few bag marks.

Here is another photo with some different lighting. My concern with the coin is the tiny bag marks on the cheek.

The reverse is better than the obverse.
The cheek marks are your big issue as you mentioned. Nothing major but lots of minor marks.
Probably MS65 in my opinion, if you are feeling it may not live up to the grade guessing it is slabbed MS66.
Great coin either way, hope you enjoy it.

All the tiny tics on the cheek hold it back to MS63 for me. It is an above average strike with great details on the reverse wreath.

Do you like the coin? If yes, keep it regardless of the grade on the slab. (If you think it should be higher, try crossing over.) If you don't like it, send it back. The fact that you are even posting about it says you have an issue with it, so I'd say send it back and get what you want.

I do like the coin, but I was wanting the near perfect example that is not going to be available in MS 64+. I looked at some CAC approved MS 64 that were in the same price range, but were not as good as my coin. At this time, I can not pay the $1000 plus for a MS65. Here is a quote from Wayne Miller "The typical 1921 S is very poorly struck, with heavy surface abrasions. Some uncirculated specimens evidence little luster; others are toned a lovely light yellow; still other exhibit full mint bloom. Fully struck pieces are available, but are usually heavily bag marked or lacking in visual appeal".
This coin is going into my collection.

Yes, the ticks are a bit troublesome, but surely this is a 64!
