Before I say anything I want to say that I support NGC's Ancients Grading which generally makes a good attempt at grading ancients.

However a little bit of my confidence in NGC Ancients died when I saw these two coins in the new Stacks and Bowers auction.

This one graded MS Star, 5/5 Strike and 5/5 Surface looks very out of place considering the coin in question here (Obverse looks okay excld small flat areas on parts of hair and wreath but Reverse is another story?)

On this coin I agree fully with the grade tho the fact that they missed the Bankers mark in Zeus beard has left me scratching my head. As considering their grading guidelines should have been noted (details grade) not only on the holder but also lowered the Surface rating substantially

Am I being too hard on NGC here or is it justified?
(or even better have I made a massive mistake here?)

I normally disagree with NGC's grading they tend IMO to over grade when the coin is rare and under grade with it isn't. However in the case of these two coins I think they are right on the mark.

I am personally well aware of the technical grading standards applied by NGC for their Ancients grading program, and agree with their grading here. We need to remember that these are not machined coins and comparative grading cannot be applied. Hence, each coins is unique and must be graded as such. As a 40+ year collector of ancients and 20+ years as a dealer, I was never a fan of slabbed ancients until NGC got Vagi to head the department. Now I carry a sizable inventory of entry-level but high grade (priced $100 or less) NGC graded Roman Coins in my inventory.

Thanks for the replies echizento and numisart. I think I was too hard on the stater due to the lack of detail on the rider and horse's head. On the second coin I agree with the grade but don't agree with not recognising the Bankers Mark on the beard.

In general terms of NGC grading is it more technical grading or market grading? Maybe this is why I am going hard on them?

For clarification I collect PCGS Shillings so maybe why I am mistaking the style of grading (technical vs market grading?)
