Well this month marks the one year anniversary of venturing into ancients I have learn't a lot and enjoyed specialising in Pella Mint issues of Alexander. This post is of the 4 ancients that I have picked up in this past year primarily to ask for opinions on how my first year of ancient purchases was. First from Numismatik Lanz my first Alexander tet from Pella 325-315BC for $1100USD Second from ebay a Macedonian bronze of Kassander struck as an emergency issue prior to the Battle of Ipsus in 302-301BC for $330USD Thirdly from Roma Numismatics another Alexander tet from Pella 325-315BC for $2175USD with the thunderbolt mintmark which is a little rarer. Capping of the year is another Alexander tet which you guessed it is also from Pella for $2360USD in NGC 5/5 STRK 4/5 SRFC Overall I am a little bit pessimistic on how I did with coin 3, unsure with coin 2 but rather confident with coins 1 and 4. Opinions on how I did would be awesome because overall I am feeling a little unsure on how I went Thanks everyone

I can't speak to the amounts you paid, but I do know that I look at the Alexanders and think, "OMG, OMF!" They are stunningly beautiful acquisitions. You have a connoisseur's taste in these issues. An amazing start...may be hard to top!

1, 3 and 4 are extremely fine coins that would be prized in nearly any private collection, so the price paid is well worth it. I can't say whether you could have gotten them for less but I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Coin 2 is my favorite though. I love a coin with history behind it, and emergency issues have a clearer story than nearly any other coin we can get. A very nice year for you!

I am unsure how you did on the greek bronze coin, but you definitely payed premium prices for those tets (Not inckuding #1), as is expected. It's what can be expected when buying high end coins from these premium ancient coin dealers. You could've done better on price, but those are such nice pieces that even if the resale price isn't there now, it will be soon enough.

Thanks for the confidence booster just afraid of being ripped off (happened to me when I was younger with coins.) Otherwise we have another year to look forward to then :P

For your first year you did fantastic. Your three life time Alexander tets are very beautiful and would be an excellent addition to any collection. I like your Kassander because of the history why the coin was issued, but seems a bit out of placed when compared with the tets. Still a very nice coin. I'm looking forward to see what you come up with for next year.

Extremely high detailed coins (the Alexander tets), most of us dont have such beauties. And thats, of course, because they are very high priced coins. For the quality a 10/10 the price probalby 7/10 ;-)

You did great your first year. It looks like you made good careful choices. Once you become familiar with ATG tets you can, just by looking at the coin's style, determine not only it's mint but often recognize the die engraver. Even if we don't know his name. I always liked the Pella engraver around this time 325-315 BC. Here's mine. A little worn but a cool style. But my favorite is your Kassander. I have 4 of this type, Athena/bow, but none of mine shows an undertype. I'm envious.

Nice coin tenacious with price 232 you have to look out for some issues from Memphis which are rather similar differed only by the style of the thunderbolt. Otherwise thanks everyone for the encouragement.

I find the whole Tetradrachm asignment facinating. Here is mine from "PELOPONNESOS, Uncertain" clearly not a life-time issue but has a similar thunderbolt in the field: Details: PELOPONNESOS, Uncertain. Circa 300-280 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 16.70 g, 1h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aėtophoros seated left; thunderbolt in left field, Delta;O below throne. Price 760A. VF.

Didn't realise there was another similar one tho you can tell the style of yours isn't consistent with the Pella mint issues. The thunderbolt is generally representative of the Pella mint issues however Di/Staters of Alexander with them are attributed to Amphipolis. Anyway I have developed a coin display cross informational display for Pella which has been a bit of a specialisation for me since I started.
