Today I was at a LCS looking for gold and I was after a 1/2oz AGE or Maple but they had none.. so I was offered my pick of a First Spouse coin to which I have no idea what they was. he told me a story about 2008/09 that people was melting these coins down as he told me he also melted some himself ..

I ended up buying a 2009 Margaret Taylor proof still in the factory mint box for $610 out the door.. I know about what AGE sell for and that was darn close but I didn't know the coin was 24Kt gold and mint numbers was 4936 proof made but if his story is true then there are a lot less that exist then the mint run.

I end up buying a 1/4 1993 AGE proof for $310 and a 1/4 2009 Australian Kangaroo for $320 .. so I walked out feeling very good because the deals was better then online buying and as we talked a lady came in to buy a gold coin ..so don't believe MSN as people are buying gold.

In 2007 I wanted to collect the series, then gold skyrocketed an I became unemployed. I only have one left from the first four.

The three I sold were sold for melt value. I would like to acquire a short set of the retro style coins Jefferson, Jackson,Van Buren, Buchanan.

After the first 4 spouse coins sold out, the popularity waned. The average coin collector on a budget couldn't afford to shell out $2000+ a year on these.

Add in the fact that outside of the well-known spouses the sales for the lesser known ones were going to languish.

If I recall correctly, several of the individual spouses had tiny mintages especially the uncirculated versions.

Started collecting the FS proofs near the end of 2012 when the Alice Paul coin was nearing sellout. I have 14 and none of them are before 2012. The most expensive of the FS proofs was 2011 when they sold for either $1,004 or $1,014. I'll try to back fill the first four years after the series ends next year if gold is still trending down from its previous highs in 2011. It will be the crowning set of my numismatic career when completed.
