Poll Question
So in 2018 we may have our first U.S. colorized commemorative with the passage of bill H.R. 2722, the "Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Act". Obviously pink is involved in this one. http://www.coinnews.net/2015/07/17/...se-approval/There are strong opinions about colorized coins here on CCF and I'm sure this will stir up a lot of debate. How do you feel about this possibility?

A breast cancer awareness coin would be useless with out pink on it. I just hope the design is outstanding and the use of pink is integral to the design and not just an obligatory pink ribbon on a bad design.
It would be great if this issue sold out, the subject really hits home.

I can understand the desire for pink on this commemorative issue, but I feel it will set a very bad precedent for the US Mint. If I want colour I will go to the RCM.

I love certain colorized coins. Like the nickels they did on Littleton from like '04-06 were beautiful. Some others, not so much. The breast cancer awareness idea is perfect, though.

slippery slope. What other "good causes" are there? Who decides?

I think many missed the actual details part of the story - the coins are not going to be colorized as in using paints or enamels. The coloring is going to be done using a gold that has a pink hue to it... that also will affect the weight and size of the coin.
If they start painting coins... I am out. If they use a gold with a natural pink hue - I am fine with it.

Quote: I feel it will set a very bad precedent Quote: .....slippery slope. Seriously ..... it's one coin, where the color is as identifiable as the written message. What would a coin commemorating our forgotten and discarded wounded vets be with just a silver or gold heart, instead of an actual purple heart ? What are we afraid of , the new Eisenhower C&C is going to come out with an artificially colored So.Cal retirement tan? Maybe a little color will bring back the actual "commemorative" relevance to some of these coins and spur recent lagging sales.

denco...if they want to spur sales - they should start picking good designs. They have failed to do that on many of the commemorative offerings lately. Poor designs and poor sales and the solution is to gimmick the coins to spur sales...
That said - this isn't going to be a colorized coin. It will appear pink because of how it is manufactured - not because of some paint.

Quote: ...if they want to spur sales - they should start picking good designs. Exactly my point, some of the RCM's best and most sought after designs have been enameled coins. Does anyone really think that the only really good coin designs have to be one dimensional silver or gold designs. Quote: That said - this isn't going to be a colorized coin You don't know that, the preliminary and final designs have not even been proposed yet. The only thing the bill proposed was a change in the gold coin composition (which requires a mandatory congressional approval) to add more copper to the gold composition to make the gold coin rose colored. I can almost guarantee that the gold, silver, and clad half will incorporate some incarnation of a pink ribbon. Otherwise what is the point of any design that does not include this element. I just hope it is enameled and not paint or (ugh) a decal.

denco - good designs aren't enameled on the coin. The underlying design is either good or not. I haven't purchased a 3D coin or a glow int he dark coin and never plan on it. I've read the report and the coin will contain a mined gold component that is pink in color and will have a mixed composition that makes the coin look pink. There is nothing in it saying they'll enamel the color into the coin.

Again, I understand having colour on this particular issue, it is for a good reason. However, this will open the door for more colourized coins, many of which will have weak justification for its use. To be blunt, I feel most will be colour because, golly gee, Fonz, sculpting is hard! Restated more bluntly, I see colour as crutch for those who cannot sculpt. (For the record, I cannot sculpt.) Ultimately If I do not like it, I do not have to buy it.

Doug58s has a good point - the gold coin (at least) will feature "pink" gold, not enameling. There is no mention yet of any colorization of any type on the silver & clad coins but there is nothing that says that won't happen, either, and if ever there was an appropriate time, this is it. I think if I had to buy an enameled coin, this would look pretty nice. Can you imagine a simple pink ribbon on a cameo background?
