I recently received the 1964 Andorra proof set, much like this one
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/2-ANDORRA-19...231444557992

Now my two coins are in the cheap plastic packaging that they came in and I was wondering if it was safe just to keep them in the box without the plastic. Especially since I don't know how safe the plastic is for the coins.

Thanks!

I'd be leary of any coin holders from that period of time.

The dangers of PVC were not well known and many holders from that time period are saturated with it.

If I owned the set I would remove the coins and place them in flips that are free of PVC. I would retain the original holder and COA for posterity just in case you (or your heirs) decide to sell the set down the road. Originality adds value.

Nice coins!

Thanks! And I like the presentation of the box. I just don't trust it either XD new flips would be a great idea. Thanks again!

NO! First, check to see if it is PVC! PVC gives off a distinct smell, very plasticy. Also, the material is soft, and then hardens after some of the PVC seeps into the coins. If you remove it you may hurt the value, although if it is PVC then you should remove it. Check first! Here's a good video about finding and explaining PVC and coins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py_dOWsVxM0

After looking online, these coins actually seem to be pretty rare. The 50 Diners only had a mintage of 5,150 and the 25 diners with a mintage of 2350. Not sure if that's enough justification to get them sent out and graded or not since most of the ones online are raw.

And, I forget to mention, the plastic they're in was already opened when I received them.
