I submitted several coins to NGC for grading and they sent me an e-mail today stating that several were worth submitting for "conservation." Is it worth it? What is the benefit?

I haven't heard of them doing that before (sending an email like that), its possible that there are problems on the coins (PVC, Verdigris) that would make the coin get a details grade and negatively impact their value. If they emailed you, they must feel that these problems could be fixed by conservation.

What exactly did you submit for grading and if you have pictures it would help if you could post them here.

I don't have pictures but several had the PVC green slime. Others were straight out of mint packaging. 58-63 Franklin proof coins and one 64 Kennedy proof.

Well, PVC-infested coins won't get encapsulated in the first place. That's as it should be, because once started PVC eventually destroys the coin, every single time. PVC is not something you mention casually; it's something you panic about.

I would trust NGC and have them sent to NCS. Otherwise you've spent money for a no-grade.

I had a few NZ proofs sent back from PCGS in :boddybags" PVC reside and gave them a soak in acetone.
This probably cost me less than a dollar to do.
I then re submitted them and they graded OK
All NZ 1953 proofs, here are the grades I got for them;

Crown PR63CA
Half crown PR64CA
Florin PR65CA
Shilling PR65CA
Sixpence PR64+CA
Three pence PR64CA

If you can get this PVC gunk off your coins in time they will grade
