Looks like a die crack or maybe a lamination.

Yeah I think the die was cracked and a bit of metal flowed into the crack during the strike process

Thanks guys, that was my first guess as well. It's just so localized I wanted confirmation. I guess maybe the die chipped first and it started cracking similar to say a windshield?

Good Photographs! I think I'd lean towards the die chip, rather than a die crack.

It's fairly common to have a die crack coming off the tail of the 9 and arc back to the mintmark. This one has a die chip associated with it . Look up the flying D.
