I had the opportunity this week to talk with the engineers from the company that Makes Sentry Safes.

They offer a variety of safes in sizes and prices.
Some of their safes are listed as waterproof and or fireproof.
Read the information on each safe safes are rated fireproof or waterproof by how long they will protect the contens at various temperatures.

One of the fireproof safes is only good for 1/2 hour.
Some of their safes are molded. According to the engineers, event though they are molded from PLASTIC there is NO PVC in the content of these safes.

Many of their safes are made of steel and are excellent for storage of coins, and are available from places like Wal Mart for a very low price.

So when making a decision about how to store your coins safely, It is just as important to read about the storage container, before you buy it as it is to research a coin before you buy it.

I was hoping SAFE would be defined as "safe in Indiana, safe within my house, safe with me and so safe you will never have to worry about your precious coins again (after sending them to me in Indiana). Your mind will be at ease while I KEEP your coins SAFE? Any takers out there?
Rest in Peace

Richard, a little over a year ago, I bought a small portable Sentry safe at Walmart. I figured since my home is towed behind my Jeep GC (I'm a fulltime RVer) and that I am vulnerable to three dangers on the road or wherever I'm parked, fire (highest risk), accident (medium risk) and theft (lower risk), I needed some protection for my coins and most valuable personal papers. Before I bought it, I researched online for small portable fire-resistant safes; Sentry came up at the top of most lists.

This safe is small, about 15" x 12" on the inside (holds my high value coins), but weighs about 40 lbs, and is built so solidly that I think a tank could drive over it without causing it damage. It's guaranteed to withstand fire temperatures (1500F IIRC) and water penetration for 1 1/2 hours (plenty of time for a trailer fire) although I have no plans to test this guarantee.

If nothing else, it gives me peace of mind since even if my home on wheels is destroyed, there is a very good chance that my coins will survive and that I won't be left with a melted glob of silver and other metal. Even though the safe could be carried away by a thief, the places to where I go are very low risk for theft, so I don't lose sleep over this weakness of the safe; in fact, I only keep it locked while I'm on the road.

While this is starting to sound like a testimonial for Sentry safes and I do, in fact, put my trust in the name, I think my point is that having this safe has given me a much higher level of confidence that if something happens, I will not have to start over nor will suffer a major financial loss.

When I saw this topic, I remembered from my past days of collecting that many of the so called fireproof safes out there weren't really...or as you said, "...good for 1/2 hour."
Another thing I remembered was something I read a long time ago, to consider buying a relatively cheap safe to keep in one's home as a sort of "decoy" safe in the case of break in or burglary, whether one is at home or not. In this safe, one could keep some rolls of worn Wheat Cents, Buffalo nickels, a couple of worn Morgans, etc. (apologies to collectors of "worn" stuff) The "real" stuff could be kept elsewhere. Then, the common thief might be hornswallgled (sp.?)into thinking that's all you have.
