I found this 1986 penny and everything is very shiny and gold like I'm told the proofs would be. Is there anything about this penny that I should know. Also notice the strange marking on his ear.

I'm pretty sure that is a business strike coin minted at the Philadelphia mint. The mark on the ear is a contact mark from being bumped into by another object, possibly another penny.
If you scroll to the bottom of this page: http://www.lincolncentsonline.com/history.html
it will explain a little about the differences in the business strikes and the proof strikes.

Here is what a proof coin looks like in comparison to a normal coin. Notice how the proof coin is reflective, like a mirror, in the fields and frosty, called cameo, on the devices? The Mint State coin is blast white all over the coin, and is not reflective. You'll know if you have a proof coin when you find one!

Not to be too critical, but the comparison would be better with pictures of actual coins and not artists renditions.

Here is a proof coin to show you how they are easier noticed by the polished surfaces:

The surfaces of a business strike coin and a proof strike is also a lot different see side by side:

I love the look of the 50's and early 60's proofs. They look as shiny as a chrome plated wheel from that era.
