While not a Peace dollar, these embedded wood chips are in a 1904-O Morgan dollar. They do show up occasionally on coins. My guess is your Peace dollar feature is a strike-thru from a wood chip also.

That's cool v4m! Can you feel the grain? I wonder how those chips would have looked if the coin circulated down to vf or so. This is what makes morgans fun

I don't want to highjack the original thread. My only point in showing the coin was to educate those who may have not seen a "wood chip" dollar to show that the phenomenon is real, and not just a theory. Now, to the subject Peace dollar, I say it is a result of a strike-thru, and a wood chip could be the culprit, but it could be something else of course.
