This is a tuff one. I'm not a Peace dollar guy so I'm not sure if its a die artifact. It looks like possibly either a strikethrough or lamination to me. Curious what the experts will say myself Could it be possible to get a clear closeups pic of that area?

It's not a lamination error - I've had a number of those before and it looks nothing like that. I've also had grease strikethroughs, and it doesn't look like that, either. But if it is a strikethrough, it had to be some sort of solid debris to create such a well-defined shape. Here are some closeups of the "feather earring" - same lighting as the original three images (plain, left, and right). It seems best defined in the last image.

If it's incuse, it was not on the die, but something in between the die and the coin. Which would be a strike through error, like I said.

Woodchips is my first guess if it is a strikethrough. This would be debris of some kind not grease. Lamination is still a possibility though because if it cracked off early then circulated it would smooth the edges on it down especially in that area and look alot like this so I couldNT rule that out either from these pics. Your pics aren't too bad per say but to distinguish the fine details with this they need to be much more crisp. Do you have a 10x loupe you can put between the coin and camera. That works great

TC is right - being incuse strongly indicates a strikethrough. I've just never seen one like this before, and it is very neat-looking. As you can see from the first image posted, there isn't a lot of wear on this coin. Not saying it ISN'T a lamination error, but it just doesn't appear to me to be one. Woodchips are an interesting possibility, but wouldn't they get crushed and splinter under the force of the die? Here are a couple of macro photos that better highlight the error. Both have been strongly contrasted to further highlight the error. The first one also had an LED flashlight shining on it from the left - unfortunately, it also illuminated imperfections in the flip's mylar.

How could a lamination error appear in the same spot, be the same shape, and be on 3 different coins?

Huh? Do you know of more coins with the same error as this coin?

It's multiple pictures of the same coin SSK. Not pictures of multiple coins.

I thought they were different coins. I see it now. I am sorry for being dumb.

No biggie. With the variation in lighting, it does look like 3 different coins. Had me going for a minute there - thought maybe I was on to something!

Looks like you found a nice struck through debris. Very nice! I do not see it as a lamination.

Ok, with the new pics I'm going strikethrough. And I say woodchips because that's what it looks like and woodchips were used in the die polishing process so it is not that uncommon of a material for morgan and peace debris Strikethroughs

Well, seeing as how I was unfamiliar with woodchips being part of the die polishing process, I think we've figured it out. And I learned something in the process - thanks, all!

Your welcome Aahz! That's what ccf is all about Here is an old thread. Read what conder101 says. Just don't post on it. We don't like bringing up old threads... https://goccf.com/t/187392
