Several months ago my father passed down to me his coin collection. It consisted of a few common silver Washington quarters, a couple Susan B's, and a bunch of wheatbacks, mostly warn, common 20s-50s.

He shared a really crazy story with me. He was born in San Francisco on 1951. On his 45th birthday, he received a 1951-S penny in his change. Pretty cool I thought. But then it happened again on his 51st birthday!

Think about it. Same year and birth place / mint mark happening once. But then it happens a second time ON birthday number 51.

Honestly, I think the chances HAVE to be better winning the lottery.

On a side note, and I'm not sure if he even considered the irony, he sent me a complete 1973 mint set (my Bday) for Christmas. It's the only mint set in my collection, and I've always preferred business strike coins. And I especially love the mint set because they ARE business strike coins, but they haven't been touched by human hands in 35 years. They went right from the press into the sealed bags.

Great story...and long odds to get a '51s in pocket change in 1996 and 2002, much less to get them on your birthday.

That's a great story. I should pay more attention to my birthday change.

It is amazing how many things happen like that. That's why I like coins. No matter how many you have there is always a story about how you got them. They all have a past of their own. Nice story!
Rest in Peace

Another coincidence. Our yougest son was also born in 1973. And, we have mint and proof sets of that year put aside for him.
