Well, one of my local Mejer stores installed new U-Scan machines that look similar to the ones with they replaced, with the coin slot above the scanner, that did not accept halves, I still have to experiment with it, but for now, I have taken the word from the U-Scan clerk that the new machines accept halves. I asked the clerk "Are these new machines" and she said "Yeah. We've had them for about nine weeks" and I asked "Do these new machines accept half dollar coins?" and she said "Yes, the new machines accept the half dollar coins. The only thing they do not accept, are the old, large dollar coins" and I just said "Well, that is to be expected. The large dollar coins are pretty much considered obsolete currency" then I told her "Some people have claimed banks can order bags of large Ikes, but my local banks always say they can't" Then I told her "I know that most of those machines can accept $2 bills, SBA and all small brass dollars, because the SBA and brass dollars share the same electromagnetic signature" and she said "Yep" then we just chatted a bit about currency issue for a few minutes. I talk with many people, who are amazed to hear that we once had $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 bills, as well as the $100,000 and other illegal to privately own orangebacks Gold Certificates we had and what they are worth today.

I will try a half in the new machine next time I visit the store, and I of course, will share my results. Maybe I am slowly getting the message through. Stay tuned...

Well, jbuck, no such luck, and here's why:

So I tried four odd currencies on the new machines: a $2 bill, a golden dollar, an SBA (even though I know the GD and SBA dollars both share the same magnetic signature, I wanted to try both anyway, just to be absolutely sure of all) and last, and certainly not least, a half.

I tried the $2 bill: Chuh Ching! It worked.

I tried the SBA: Chuh Ching! It worked.

I tried the brass buck: Chuh Ching! It worked.

Then, it was time to try the half: Chuh Clunk! Into the rejection tray the half went.

So I asked the cashier/clerk, "I heard from another woman a few days ago, that they got new machines, and so I asked if the "new machines" took halves, and how that lady said "Yep, everything but the large older dollar coins" and then I told her that the "old machines" didn't accept them, and she told me that they should take them now" Well I asked this woman I talked to today about the "new machines" and she said the ONLY thing "new" was the scanners, and everything else is still the "old" hardware. SO that was the problem. They did NOT replace the entire machine, which was why the half still failed. I asked the woman "Do you know if these machines can be upgraded to accept halves? The coin slot fits the coin slots perfectly, so I figured they should" and she said "You know what? I don't know. I don't want to tell you "I know" and have you come back and say "Well this person said it would work" but I will have to ask about that, because no one has ever come here to these machines and tried to pay with "a piece like that" and we both agreed that the machines should be retooled to accept them, and she said "Yeah they should accept them. It's money. Money is money, right?" and I said "Yep, I've been pushing these issues for years" then her and I got into a little coin and currency chat, and I told her what to keep an eye out for, such as silver coinage, we talked about the $500+ paper denominations and such, and she told me a little about her dad's collection.

And that was about it. So, the experiment failed, and I wasted a Carter Quarter for it, seeing as I now keep all SBAs I now come across.

Ouch. The sacrifices one has to make.
