Can anyone shed some light on the triangular punch mark on this Large Cent? When might it have been done...and for what purpose?

Iluminati!

I have no idea, could've been made by a kid with a knife and nothing better to do.

I'm aware that punchmarking (or countermarking)was intiated for any number of reasons. Including changing the face value of a coin, or to legitimize a foreign coin as legal tender. I'm just curious as to the reason for this mark on this coin. After looking at hundreds of Large Cent pics...I haven't seen a countermarked specimen.

Just because someone punches something into a coin it doesn't have to mean something. For every counterstamp that does have a known, traceable meaning, there ate probably a hundred or more just random punches with no more "meaning" than boredom.

Usually you can only say a punchmark has a meaning if the same mark has been found on multiple pieces (even then we may not know what it means or who did it), or if it is recognized from another source (Such and a makers mark punch on a persons principal product.)
