Hello everyone, A while back (when I had no experience in coin collecting) I bought this roman coin, and now looking at it I am strongly convinced it is fake. It just does not look/feel right to me. I know nothing about it except that I bought it for a dollar. I am just wondering if someone can tell me what kind of coin this is and also if it is even real or not. Thanks, Michael

looks like it is probably real, it's a Roman bronze coin made in Siscia, probably 4th century,
other people here are good at IDing these

Thank you for the comments, I am going to guess that these are very common, as this one was ridiculously cheap?

We'll have to wait for some of the Roman collectors on this board to answer the rarity and value questions...I'm sure you'll have some answers soon.
In the meantime, welcome to the board, Bodey!

I have also bought ancient coins at "flea markets" ! I bought two rather decent silver coins for $20. After the purchase I told the seller "you know these are two thousand years old ?" He replied "yes I know ........ but try telling that to people around here" He could not sell them because no one believed him !

Its a shame that there are so many fakes these days that the first instinct is to assume its fake...

This is a more interesting type than it first appears. The reason it seems so odd is that the design is one created and issued for Vetranio, who also issued them for Constantius II from mints under his control. However, Vetranio abdicated before Gallus was raised to Caesar so numismatists were quite surprised when his designs cropped up (including from one of the mints that Vetranio never controlled).

Wow, very cool, when I had first bought it I couldnt find much reseach on this exact coin, I would find other varations of it which led mentome to believe it was fake, but luckily I was wrong, very, very wrong
