It would be next to impossible to second-guess a TPG from those pics, IMO.

I agree that the TPG shouldn't be second guessed based on the photos. They must have detected some rub.

Even in hand it's sometimes tough to see the slightest rub associated with an AU 58 grade. As stated, those pictures can't give us much to go on.

It's always better if you can accurately grade coins for yourself. It also saves grading and shippoing costs. TPG's are good if you wish to sell, so that a buyer and seller can find it easier to agree on the grade. The TPG'er have the advantage of examining naked coins in hand under a 10x glass. We don't, but have to look at a picture of it inside the slab. TPGraders grade millions of coins every day and so the demand is always there to push up their production rate so that profits can be maximized. Small wonder that they occasionally get their gradings wrong. For my part, this lessens my confidence in them ia little

Looks like a strike issue more than wear...hard to tell from tiny pics. Nonetheless, for the price it's hard to beat and it's an AU-58 holder, which is actually a COOL grade. There are quite a few AU-58 collectors out there, it's actually a hard grade to obtain.

TPG opinions should always be second-guessed, slab in hand, good images, bad images, it's all the same.

Generally one doesn't argue an AU58 grade; if that number is in play in your mind at all, it's probably the number the coin deserves.
For the record, I hope nobody believes it's actually possible to make an informed decision on much of anything from those images.
