I am currently looking for a MS-63 or greater (preferably PL-64) 1953 SF one cent and having no luck at all. I found this one on ebay.

Now, even though ICCS grades this as Red, to me, it is no better than RB at best (and a super ugly one at that). I would be mad if I ordered a certified red coin and got this instead.

This is the cent I want.

To me, that is a red cent. I realize that the second one is PL while the one I first linked to is MS but I would have thought the colour requirements would be the same. Aren't they?

Coins can/will tone/darken over time, even in a sealed case, but in general I find that ICCS is more liberal with the term red compared to PCGS or NGC.

As always, buy the coin not the holder.

Would any of you judge that coin to be red or am I just being picky? To me, red is red. I doubt the coin in the ICCS holder darkened naturally, since the darkening is uneven. Can a coin darken like that?

I don't buy for the holder since I am one of those who cuts the coin out of the holder as soon as I get it. I just like them when I purchase coins so I have an impartial third party opinion on grading.

A fully red 1953 shoulder fold cent circulation strike is a rarity. Good luck in finding one. I recently sold an MS 64 red(ICCS ) that was 85 per cent red for over trends. I have two more want lists. This is a tough to find modern issue in circulation strike BU.
