I picked these up today in a parking lot.

Unfortunately they weren't just laying on the ground.

I was in the bank dumping some halves and the guy next to me asked me how long it took me to save that much change. I told him a couple of days and that I looked for old coins and that dimes, halves, and quarters 1964 and older we silver. He said he had some change in his truck. I thought OK everyone has change in the ashtray or cup holder. I took out my pocket pieces and showed him a 1964 quarter and explained that silver coins would have a white edge instead of an orange edge. He said that his change didn't look like that but more like my silver dollars I had in my hand. I figured he must have a couple of Ikes. He mentioned he thought one of the coins from from the 1940's but since he already said they weren't white like the silver quarter I showed him I figured he had a couple of Jefferson nickels too or something.

He asked if I wanted to take a look at them so I said sure I'll meet you out in the parking lot when I'm done. I go out there and he hands me a Franklin half. And I can see a V nickel in his hand. He keeps handing me Franklins and Walkers to look at and pulls out a Morgan. I told him they are all common dates and circulated so were worth pretty much melt which was $X a piece. He asked if I wanted to buy them all. I gave him $75 for the lot.

He had kept the coins in a velvet bag in the cargo compartment of the drivers side door and he said that when his friends would ask for some change he would tell them to go into the truck and grab some from the console but they must have been grabbing some from the bag as he had more in there before

Having spent a fair amount of time at LCSs it never ceases to amaze me when piles of coins are brought in from the sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters of those who hoarded them until they passed.

Even when silver ran up to $50 and everyone brought every speck of silver they owned in to melt, it's obvious that there are still plenty of little piles that hadn't been touched.

I'm glad you rescued them!

$75 was a GENEROUS offer imo. I likely would have offered closer to $50. Cool story though!

You were generous but I'm the same way. Still the halves alone are worth $53.53 at todays melt value of 14.80. Not sure if the Eisenhower's are silver and the other coins except the dimes. I know some aren't.

You barely beat melt, I would have probably offered $50 for a parking lot deal. Still, a very cool thing to happen!

Yeah, your offer was a little high. but when something like that happens it's easy for us coin nuts to get overly excited and not thinking straight.

To me $75 seems like a fair offer. Junk silver halves and dimes are going for about 14 times face value so even if you simplify it to 10 times face that's $55 plus the Peace dollar for $17 and the three dollar coins you broke even. everything else is just gravy.
