So is there any added value to this or do the marks on the back kill that? Regardless, still a super awesome find from circulation.

I sold mine recently for $55, and they buyer was a little hesitant at that price. Mine was in similar condition, maybe slightly better. Gives you an idea, at least...

Sounds about right to me. These '28 series are just so cool - they seem very dark and distinct compared to today's junk.

There are still plenty of these out in the world, so they don't get much premium over face unless they are high grade.
The quote of $55 is probably right in the ball park for this.
But just think if you could increase the value of all of your money by 10% all of the time!

Plus, they're the "poor man's gold certificates" - notice that the bill is "Redeemable in gold on demand ... or lawful money..." Later bills just say "Redeemable in lawful money..."

I have a couple of higher grade examples, and they are still reasonably priced.

A fun find for sure. I found a 1934 $20 in my paper route money many moons ago. I think it's worth around $22.

If you sell it, please report the gain to the IRS.

Quote: If you sell it, please report the gain to the IRS. He'll probably have to declare a loss. It isn't worth what it was in 1928, and it's no longer redeemable in gold...

Sorry, all of this sounds inspiring, but under the current tax code, he would still be liable for the tax on two bucks - less expenses!

I love the distinction between the U.S. Treasury and the Federal Reserve. I need to get one of these and frame it.

I work as a teller at 5/3 Bank in Chicago. I have found countless '34s, a couple of silver certificates, several US notes and been able to complete rolls of silver halfs (40 and 90) quarters and dimes. This is really cool though! Wish I found a '28. My fiance pulled a '28 $20 from her Walgreens register though...anyways....really cool find!
