Normally I stick to collecting 5c but because I'm partial to die cracks and the potential Cuds that they one day could become if the die isn't retired first, I just bought this on ebay since I haven't had much luck finding Canadian 5c Cuds.

Is this a known "variety", I couldn't find it on Coins And Canada? The die break is on the reverse to the right of the date.

If it was a Cud I would think there wouldn't be any denticles on top of the Cud. Glue maybe?

The seller referred to this as a chipped die. Looks like a Cud to me but please feel free to correct my terminology. It will be a while until I have the coin in hand and can look at it more closely. I'm going to post in a separate thread a similar shaped 5c " Cud" with some denticles still showing where the seller had referred to it as a broken die.

@John1 - I too would have expected/preferred that the denticles wouldn't be there for a "real" Cud. My hypothesis is that a thin flake of the die came off rather than the die crack going deep into the die. So I'd agree with the seller that this is a chip in the die, but on the coin I'd still call it a Cud (for now).
