Hi everyone, I have been lurking around the forum for a while and have just joined. Unfortunately I have to start off with what could be a painful question for some of us (including me!). Does anyone know what's going on with Art Coins Roma? I won a couple of coins in the July 15th auction, paid for them and then nothing. When I went to check the website it appears to be shut down (or at least not working) now for several days. I have also had no communication from them regarding shipping even though their terms per the website say shipping within 14 days of payment. Any intel would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Have you tried to contact them through Vcoins?

to the community. Sorry you are having a problem. As Pishpash said try contacting them through Vcoins. I haven't done any business with them, but if they are located in the US you can file a complaint with the Police in the town or city they are located in. They might even be able to say if they have received other complaints against them.

Thanks for the tip - e-mail has been sent. This is a European auction house on the Sixbid portal that has been around for about 4 years with no complaints that I could see and they have a history of running auctions. This was the first auction of theirs that I bought something in so I didn't spend a lot - on a first purchase I like to go small just to see how they perform. Sometimes its good to be cautious.

Their website is up again (for me at least). One thing to note with ArtCoins Roma is that they are located within Italy and as such are required to follow the proper channels to export the coins. Usually this is done before the auction begins but it can cause delays after an auction has completed. Hopefully you will hear back from them soon.

In my nearly a quarter century of collecting, ACR is the only auction house I have had a problem with. I had the winning bids on a couple of lots in a different ACR Sixbid auction earlier this year. I grew concerned when, days after the auction (which I had very carefully tracked and participated in though the final seconds) I never received winning bid notifications. I wrote them, but got no response. I wrote them a couple more times. About two weeks after the auction, they finally replied with this:
"we regret to inform that we can't deliver it to you since it is hold back by the Police of the Nucleus for the Protection of Cultural Heritage because of an investigation on a theft of an important collection happened years ago in Florence. At the end of the investigation if the lots will be available again we will get in touch with you. We apologize for the inconvenience."
Never heard from them again. What bothers me about this is that I was left with the distinct feeling that if I had not aggressively pursued them for information, I would never have heard back. I was also left feeling unclear about whether their failure to respect my winning bids was related to that vague reference to a theft, or to a cultural property issue. Italy does have a Memorandum of Understanding with the US, but the lots I won were Parthian - and, so, I assumed I was safe bidding on them.
In any event, TTerrier, I see you are from Canada - and I don't know if there is an equivalent of an MOU between Canada and Italy that may be at fault for the delay you are experiencing. I hope you get your coins soon and, if not, I am really curious what you find out about ACR's lack of follow-through. Please keep us updated.

Hi, I might be able to add something. I bid on and won a few auctions through them for the 1st time in May and June. When I asked to pay by credit card, they stated they were having some sort of problem with the bank. They went incommunicado for a few weeks until I followed up again with them via email. By coincidence, I happened to be in Rome last month so I offered to stop by and collect my coins in person. This posed no problem and they have a very nice office adjacent to the Spanish Steps. They definitely exist but seem to be a bit lax in the customer service department. Their website has apparently changed to http://artcoinsroma.it/ita/ . It is working for me.

Thanks for the help everyone - I can now see the website again which is good news. I don't normally get fussed about delays as I am used to them with Canada Customs (up to a month in some cases). What bothers me with this one is I sent the payment immediately by Paypal so I know they have the money, but then there is no communication back. I won some coins in a Gitbud & Nauman auction the previous month and those arrived from Germany at my door in 6 days so I know this can be done. I will keep you posted on how long this process takes.

First, so BOB L did you pay for the coins, and lose your money? As for me, I won't do business with Italians. I don't know how the country functions. My family fled Italy a century ago, and I am thrilled they did. Alas, the Romans are dead and little remain but ruins and the incredible coins we collect! I also know Italy has some of the stricter rules regarding exporting coins so that certainly complicates things. However more importantly, the concept of customer service is foreign to Italy. That does not mean that they are not hospitable or decent, indeed my family is awesome when I visit them. Customer service however is non existent. Good luck with this auction house!

Good news! ACR replied to my query and shipped about a week ago (with a tracking number). The bad news is my friends at Canada Customs are now doing their usual 2 - 3 week check to make sure the coins are really just coins - oh well I can live with that.
