Good morning,

Recently I decided to clean few of the coins I have received from my grandfather, and I noticed one of them got a nice goldish color. I tried looking online but all I found was a similar but bigger copper coin.

Can anyone please help giving more details about this coin, its metal type and value ?

Here 2 pictures of front and back

Thank you

I am no expert, but I would expect to see the design on a bronze follis, not a gold coin like this one

The coin is supposed to be an AE Follis of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I 527-565 AD, from the Constantinople mint, regnal year 12, E or fifth officina. Reference Sear # 163. Now it could just be the picture and the over cleaning of the coin, but it just doesn't look right to me. The edge is too uniform and there is no border that is usually seen on coins of this type. IMO this is a reproduction.

Appears to be a match for a well-documented fake (although, of course, usually produced in bronze) of a Justinian I follis posted both at Forum's Fake Coin Reports and at the forgerynetwork.

Probably a "tourist" coin, reproduced to sell to unwary travelers.
