A lot I won on ebay just arrived: 10 bronze prutahs of the hasmonean dynasy in good condition, for just 7,5 euro's a piece. Some are in great conditon for bronze prutahs, so I'm really excited! My biggest challenge is trying to identify some (which seems to be really hard) Hasmonean or Hasmonaean name originated from Maccabee family ancestor Hasmoneus or Hasmon or Asamonaios. Mattathias Maccabeus, a jewish priest from the town of Modein near Jerusalem rebelled against the decree by Seleucid king of Judaea Antiochus IV Epiphanes imposing the Greek religion on the Jews. Judas Maccabeus, son of Mattathias overthrew the Seleucid armies and became High priest and ruler of Judaea. After his death in 160 BCE, his brother Jonathan succeeded him. He was killed in 142 BCE and Simon his younger brother succeeded him. Antiochus VII granted the Hasmonean high priest Simon Maccabeus the right to mint coinage. Jewish symbols were used on these coins. These were copper coins. Simon was assassinated in 134 BCE. John Hyrcanus I, son of Simon succeeded him as the high priest and ruler of Judaea.

Fantastic lot, Dutch. I have sometimes wondered at the fact that we don't see more (any?) Judaean on this board. Nice to see these.

I believe the lower right may be a Hendin 1145 (Alexander Jannaeus).

I am impressed ! Not the kind of thing that generally appeals to me but even my 'jaundiced' eye can see that they are borderline superb for the type. Dare I say actual "museum" quality ?
Excellent score. The deals are there for those who patiently watch what goes by.

thanks for the positive reactions, and for a possible reference bob.
The seller wrote in its description that he bought most from David Handin himself, which explains the quality of some.

Chris, Dutch's coins probably span several similar types. Hendin types 1132 through 1146 cover this type of prutah, and span the reigns of John Hyrcanus I, and his sons Judah Aristobulus I and Alexander Jannaeus. Although the paleo-Hebrew does indeed look different from coin to coin due to misspellings and formatting variations by the die engravers, I believe that the legends are similar. All the Hyrcanus types say, "Yehohanan the High Priest and the Council of the Jews," while the Aristobulus types just change the first word Yehohanan (Hyrcanus' Hebrew name) to Yehudah, and the Jannaeus types change it to Yehonatan.
