I began buying medals at flea markets for a grandchild ("Look, kid, Pirate Money!").

He's moved on from his pirate thing, but I'm still fond of medals, so I bought this one for my myself ...

... and I am having fits trying to make heads-or-tails of it, literally, in that I am not certain which would be the obverse & reverse.

Googling the image got me nowhere (within the limits of my patience).

Googling the name of the bank got me one link ( http://www.bloomberg.com/research/s...capId=933186 ) to a bank incorporated (perhaps re-incorporated?) in 1992. It seems odd that an organization worthy of a medal would be so hard to find, nu?

But the kicker is the imagery:

Q/ What's with the foot on the winged gear?

Q/ Who is that woman (?Hagar?), and why is she crawling, and where does she hope to go?

Q/ Why would a (presumably fiscally responsible) bank put a man's face on the sun, and in the moon?

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Q/ Does anyone recognize the engraver's initials?

Sorry it's in Spanish, but it's the best I could find. Look at the price though!

Edited commemorative bronze medal in 1979.

The unit, finished in high relief, built by the famous Spanish sculptor and medalist Julio Lopez Hernandez, National Arts Award and member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.

The piece of excellent workmanship, weighs 251 grams and measures 8.1 cm in diameter

On the obverse a pastor with cachaca lying next to a tree and looking at the sky where the Sun is observed, the moon, lightning, clouds and stars. In the center you can see the signature of the author and the contour the name of the bank.

For its part, the back is adorned at the top with one foot on a wheel with wings holding onto the sky, alluding reason the god Mercury pattern of trade, while under a capital, coins, ropes and a sign appears with the dates of the anniversary (1929-1979). The scene is completed in the cord with the inscription of the word alluding to the event.

It is in excellent condition for his age, with minimal signs of wear and time.

It is aimed at collectors and fans of commemorative medals signed by renowned artists.
80 Euro's current rate $87.70 but as always asking and selling price can be widely different.
Gotta love google translate!

Thank you, alganbagerap & Circus!

EU 80 including VAT yields net EU 66 to the seller - if s/he ever gets it - but that is just enough to compel me to blow my profits on a nice velvet coin bag in which to store my U$D 10 flea market treasure.

I'm glad to see that I retain my impeccable good taste, even if I did confuse obverse & reverse.

Cheers,
