Whenever I open a roll of quarters to do laundry the first thing I do is scan the edges for silver. About 9 months ago I did this and when I spotted what I thought was a pre-65 silver quarter, but when I pulled it out to check the year I found a 2002 P Tennessee State Quarter. I am assuming that somebody had a silver or platinum plated quarter that they accidentally spent but thought it might also be a lamination error. Thoughts? I haven't seen any like it in circulation in all the rolls I have gone through. (I put it in a larger flip so you could see the edge still hoping that worked.)

there were special sets of 90% silver State Quarters. I found a silver texas quarter about a month ago. try dropping it on a wooden table as well as a clad quarter and see if theres a sound difference.

Someone might have broken it out of an annual silver quarter set. Do the drop test and listen for the ring or do the tissue test.

It is a 2002 P business strike so it did not come out of a silver proof set. The most likely explanation is that it was plated with silver or platinum as long as the weight is correct, plated State Quarters show up here quite frequently.

It sounds very similar to clad quarter when dropped and it has a P mint mark not S which threw me. I think all the silver State Quarters were San Fran weren't they? The coin itself looks uncirculated, I am glad I pulled it out and didn't just pass it off as another TN quarter. Thanks for the tips. Will also try the tissue test if I can find one around the house.

ITS NOT SILVER. San Francisco is the ONLY mint that makes silver quarters, and even then those coins are PROOF STRIKES, not BUSINESS STIKES! If the coin is silver plated then it will come back positive on the tissue test anyways. Lets just be clear: Philly has not made silver quarters for 51 YEARS and they are certainly not going to start anytime soon. This coin was plated by a third party and sold in a set. No value over $0.25, except maybe a bit of cool factor. If you dont know the difference between proof coins and uncirculated, or Buisness, coins, take a look at this website: http://lynncoins.com/proofcoin_article.htm

I could never, ever understand why anyone would do this to test a coin. Sort of like saying cut off a piece of an oil painting to see if real. Or scratch the paint on a Ferrari to see how deep the paint goes. Dropping coins and possibly denting them makes no CENTS.

I have 7 of these special quarters. I got suspicious on the 1st one I found. The latest one I got has a drill hole on the side. I guess someone did a little investigation on their own. Evidently there isn't any copper in it. Otherwise it would be visible in the hole. However, I'm sure there was a purpose for minting it this way. I just haven't had the time to call the Mint. LOL I know they will be highly collectible one day or as soon the Mint print out an artical about it. LOL

What is the mint mark of the one with the hole? Do you have a picture?

Can you confirm mint marks?
From the photos provided, it looks like at least one of them is a "D" mint mark, which would confirm that it is a plated or standard coin (no silver quarters were minted in Denver). These appear to be plated.

Right, these are not silver quarters. In fact, two of them are "D" mint mark as per the scribbles next to each coin. However, I don't think these coins have copper in them as well. Perhaps, they were minted with other metal, like nickle maybe?

Back when I started collecting you could find these on HSN in sets. I have the 99p and the 2000p version. I think you could also find them at Littleton Just silver plated for fancy box sets they were selling.
