Hello. I apologize in advance if this question is not being asked in the right forum. I live in the states, and I have recently started buying from a Canadian dealer. I can receive international packages at my Gopost address (it's kind of like a USPS postal storage locker: I receive an email telling me when there is a package available for pickup, and I can sign for it 24/7 at nearby storage lockers).

The potential problem is that I cannot receive (international) REGISTERED MAIL at this address. My dealer ships to me via 'Xpresspost USA' (for higher value coins). So my question (sorry for being long-winded) is whether 'Xpresspost USA' is automatically considered REGISTERED MAIL (by this term, I mean that the package under lock and key/audit trail for chain of custody throughout its journey)? Or is REGISTERED MAIL an add-on service/option that can be purchased at time of shipping (like USPS offers)?

I find the Canada Post website unclear on this point: it calls 'XpressPost USA' REGISTERED MAIL, but it implies that REGISTERED MAIL only means guaranteeing a signature upon delivery without necessarily having the chain of custody throughout (like USPS has for its domestic registered mail: the package is always the responsibility of a specific postal employee). I just thought that maybe some folks on this forum might ship via registered mail from Canada to USA (and be able to answer my question). Thank you!

I think there was a problem a year or so back with the USPS not signing on to the international Registered Mail agreement or something so Canada Post cancelled Registered Mail to the US. Registered Mail requires a signature on delivery and has a maximum insurance value of $60 and is only supposed to be used for documents. Xpresspost USA has tracking, a default insurance value of $100 and a maximum insurance value of $500 and a guaranteed delivery date. Signature is an additional option that can be selected by the sender. We ship by Tracked Packet USA which also has tracking but has a maximum insurance value of just $100 or by Expedited Parcel USA which is a few dollars more but allows you to insure up to $500. It may take a few days longer for delivery than Xpresspost but is noticeably cheaper. I don't know for sure but I would imagine all tracked mail is treated the same as far as security goes. It doesn't really make cost sense to have a whole bunch of different procedures. That being said we did have a $200 coin where the tracking showed that it made it to JFK but never came out the other side so had to reimburse the buyer and then wait a couple of months for the insurance claim to go through.

We solved the problem for our U.S. customers and dramatically reduced our shipping costs as well by doing one simple thing. We moved to a location that lets us walk across the border and send our coins from the U.S. To the U.S. It has really solved all of the issues we were having and has dramatically increased our U.S. Sales.
We will not even sell in Canada anymore unless the customer agrees to pay for tracked shipping, which is very expensive here in Canada. The result is we are now just over 70 per cent export with our ebay sales.
Sad state really, when we as a Canadian based seller can offer FREE tracked shipping to our American buyers of Canadian coins and have to charge a minimum of 10 dollars shipping to Canadians. From the U.S. We even ship to Europe cheaper than we can to Canada.

As stated above, Canada post no longer offers registered to the US. Tracked packet is the cheapest at around $14 but offers no signature option (just delivery confirmation). Further more, Canada Post will not allow you to send anything but "paper" as registered world wide. Which is ridiculous considering all of the G20 countries allow it (even the USA). If you want to track a coin to Europe and a handful of countries outside of that from Canada you're looking at $40+- which is a ridiculous amount of money for an envelope under 100 Grams. As PC mentions, living relatively close to the border, I also have the benefit of shipping USPS in certain cases but for many Canadians, it's not an option. Canada Post has by far the most expensive shipping choices world wide.

Registered mail within Canada is quite reasonable at $9.00 + postage. Registered mail to the US is $25 sent via XpressPost. Too expensive.

You could buy up to $1000 liability but what is the point to it with all the restrictions?

From Canada Post:

Additional Liability Coverage

Additional Liability Coverage is available for domestic Registered Mail items up to $5,000, for a fee. Certain exceptions apply.

Canada Post shall have no liability for loss or damage of Registered Mail items containing banknotes, stocks, bonds, coupons or other securities negotiable by the bearer, lottery tickets, travellers' cheques, coins, jewellery, manufactured and non-manufactured precious metals, precious stones, gold bullion, gold dust or cancelled or uncancelled postage stamps.
