Hi All,

Found this in an estate sale. Woman's husband was born in Italy. It's in near perfect condition and appears to be a Silver 1928 Mussolini coin.

It is definitely silver I know that much. I'm just not sure how to tell if it's a later made commemorative coin or if it's original. Anyone know a value on something like this?

I believe it is a privately made fantasy issue. I saw many of these at European shows back in the 70s. Not sure of their origin, but I believe they were made in Italy.

Although this looks modern indeed, the original issue is not fantasy and actually does exist: http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces16857.html
This coin feels like it's a modern re-strike, but it could aswell be a near-perfect and well preserved coin.
What makes doubt that is the lack of toning (which should be present on a 77 year old silver coin!), no wear, frosted high spots aswell as having very reflective low spots, traits very common on newly-issued European coins, primarily nickel.

x2an---The coin on Numista is an authentic one with the portrait of Victor Emmanuel not Mussolini. To my knowledge, no authorized coin was ever issued with the portrait of Mussolini.

Woops, missed that part. I went for reverse mostly only and for a quick glance the portraits looked similar
That explains everything.

This is a fantasy issue struck in 1983 to commemorate the centennial of Benito Mussolini's birth. It was struck in both BU & Proof and sold as a commemorative. They are typically struck in cupro-nickel or a similar white metal. I have never seen one in silver. The reverse of this coin is copied from the actual 1928, 10th Anniversary End of WWI, 20 Lire coin featuring King Vittorio Emanuelle III on the obverse.

The actual 1928 20L coin featuring King Emanuelle III, is a .600 silver World Crown which is a tough coin to collect in mint state. It will set you back more than $1,500 in MS-64!
