Despite its being from China, I'm not especially suspicious regarding this specimen's authenticity, but somebody tell me what I'm missing here. So far as I know, this is a common issue that I'd have a hard time making a case for even a tenth of the asking price, irrespective of its having been certified MS66 by NGC.

Coin appears to have scratches all over the surface, though could be raised lines from die scratches, (and I am not referring to the obvious die breaks), too many towarrant 66 in my humble opinion. However something about the coin just doesn't sit right in addition to the fact that it is coming from China. The NGC site has no photo of this coin to compare. That said, the price is insane for a common date 8 that is readily available in high grades and usually well struck up.

That's worrisome when you're being asked to spend this kind of money.

The "scratches" look to me to be due to fairly ordinary (for this genre) die cracks. That said, a coin that technically grades at 66 doesn't mean necessarily that it's an attractive 66.

There is a bog difference in appearance from the obvious die cracks and the proliferation of small "scratch like marks" in the fields of the coin. Maybe the seller added an extra zero in the price by mistake.

Here's another from the same seller, in this case a slightly better date/mm. Same absurd pricing.

Remember when you first started collecting, and the mistakes you made with those early purchases (especially any made via mail)? One of my very first purchases was a complete Ike dollar collection (BU/Proof, 32 coins/album) It was heavily hyped and I was "blinded by the light." I paid nearly $400.00 for very lack-luster "BU" coins (about twice what they were worth). This seller, with the common date 8 Reales, coin is waiting for a new generation "Me" with a lot of disposable income, an accommodating wife, and very little first-hand knowledge. Jack

Lucky- that second thread, Mexican Republic 8, is a pretty coin. I'm not qualified to second guess NGC, but, personally, I've seen much better examples in grades much lower than this one. I've been hoping for one of these for a long time. For me, it's a matter of waiting for the right one to come along (no urgency/little cash). I have a 1935 peso but the phrygian freedom cap of that design is much smaller than those of the Republic coin. This coin seems to be priced absurdly. I think he's hoping for a low information investor, rather than a collector. It'll be interesting to see if anyone bites on this obviously overpriced coin. Think of all you could do with the money he's asking for just one coin! Jack
