I have an 1812 with what APPEARS to be a Large 8 in date.
If this is in fact the case, does this automatically mean it is the 1812/1 variety?
I compared the 8 on this to that of the 1811 which I own, and noticed it is approx. 1/2 mm difference larger in height.
If in fact a Large 8, does this BY DEFAULT make it the 1812/1 variety?

Appreciate the help of knowledgeable collectors of this series before I actually "pull the trigger" and submit for grading.

Also, any opinion on whether I would GET a grade from PCGS?

There are several 1812 marriages that have the large "8". Judging by the 1s in the date I THINK you may have an O-103. As Amida said, I'd need a reverse pic to be sure which marriage it really is.

Here is a posting of the reverse.
What are the key indicators you look for in this specific variety?
Is it more rare, or common?
Worth submitting to PCGS?

Appreciate your previous response.

I am a 30 year collector, and this is the oldest coin I have found.
New to Coin Community Forums, glad I found this site.

Thanks so much for your kind responses.

It is an O.103. Common R1. A nice coin none the less.

Thanks to you both of your time and interest.

The Varieties is pretty new to me, and I do not have your resources or knowledge.

Have a great week, and continue mentoring !

Welcome to the CCF, Sandiegoguy. I've found this pocket sized book to be most helpful for IDing the better Bust Half varieties: "Top 100 R4 & R5 Capped Bust Dollar Varieties" by Edgar Sounders. It sells for under $20.

Buy the book before the coin AND join the CCF crew, too.
