This coin is really shiny and has weird bumps all over the obverse and reverse, what is it?

they're fairly common. some people do pay a slight premium but not something a true error collector would pay extra for.

I've run into the same thing - with dimes and also pennies. They are few and far in between.

I slap anything like this that is unusual into a 2x2 and stick it in my red storage box. Isn't going to break the bank and you never know.......

This is not Struck Through Grease. This is what die wear looks like on the surface of a coin. It's very common, no premium. The effect is sometimes called "orange peel"

The orange peel effect on the Cents was from a poor rinsing before plating.

I would shy away from them on a coin you want as a collectible as they only get worse with time. A 84 DDO or 83 DDR with this affect would not be worth as much without that problem on the planchet.

What you are describing as "orange peel" on the cents is not "orange peel" at all. On the cents, It is the result of the rinse resulting in corrosion between the zinc and the copper plating. It forms those bumps from the inside out. Its literally rot.

On the dime and coins that show the "Orange peel" effect, the surface of the die has ripples and lines caused by die wear and fatigue of the die steel.

Two completely different issues.

No Orange peel on those cents, all Orange peel on the dime.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks for the education Bill!

I always kinda knew what orange peel looked like(or at least I thought I did) but I had never seen a pic of an obvious example labeled as such. Looks just like I though it does
